History

1st West Waverley has been providing high-quality scouting to Mt Waverley’s children and youth since 1964. We have enjoyed a long track record of robust membership and are one of a small number of Groups that provide scouting from 6 to 26 under the one roof.

Since its inception in 1908, Scouting has been dedicated to the ideal that young people will make better citizens and be happier individuals if their natural enthusiasm and desire for adventure and to be with friends are allied to a sense of purpose and achievement. It is a framework within which important ‘life skills’ can be learnt, such as leadership, self-reliance, initiative, responsibility, community spirit, teamwork, first aid, and care for the environment.

Scouting can offer endless possibilities and is unique in that it encompasses so many different types of activities and skills in a safe and fun environment, giving the youth a ‘taste’ for learning new skills, that could lead them to future hobbies, adventures or even careers.

1st West Waverley Scout Group was formed in 1964. After meeting in a family garage, the Youth Centre, and with other groups, our Hall was built and opened in February 1969. Starting with a Cub Pack, a Scout Troop soon followed, Senior Scouts (now Venturers) were added in the late ’60s and then a Rover Crew in 1977. When Joeys were introduced in the early ’90s a Mob was added. We are currently one of the largest of Victoria’s 400 scout groups. Our Hall in Fairway Avenue is the venue of our weekly meetings, ceremonies, social and other scouting occasions. It was funded by the parents of 1WWS members at the time. Since then it has been extended twice and renovated regularly to maintain the building.

We are proud of our independent heritage having never merged with another Group and the fact we can offer scouting from age 6 to 26. Being well on the way to its 60th anniversary 1st West continues to remain a prominent Group in Victorian scouting.
